Hormones and Mood Connection

Hormones and mood connection.jpg

Clinically diagnosed depression presents in 21% of adults in the US at some point in their lifetime, though we suspect that this number has risen dramatically in the past year. What many people don’t know is that it’s not always serotonin that’s to blame.

Enter: Hormones

Dysregulation of cortisol, thyroid hormone, estrogen, and testosterone have all been shown to have an impact on mood disorders. If you want to dive into the details, we’ve linked to an excellent review article at the bottom of this post. Unfortunately, most medical providers rarely check these prior to prescribing antidepressant medications, but that doesn’t have to be the case.

Our Naturopathic Doctors take a holistic approach to your health, so in addition to listening to the full breadth of your concerns during a comprehensive intake, we also take into consideration lab testing for things like hormones levels, neurotransmitters, nutritional status, and much more.
